USAAF servicemen stationed in Norfolk, UK 1942-45: 70,000

Here’s a link-up between our two concurrent rice shows. The 2nd Air Division was based in Norfolk and B-24 ‘Liberator’ bombers left here for their sorties to Germany. The most celebrated individual here was actor James Stewart, who was given the role of ‘Group Executive Officer’; grounded, perhaps, for fear of the disastrous morale-kicking consequences of him failing to return home. 6,700 airmen were killed on raids.
Did you know there are Norwich’s in Connecticut, Vermont, New York State and Michigan ?
